The Bentley S2 was a luxury touring car built between the years of 1959 until 1962. It was the second of three model versions, which replaced the aging design of the R-type. The S2 utilized an aluminium 6.23 liter V8 engine in place of the old 6 cylinder 4,887cc unit which had been discontinued in 1959. Most examples were built in the factory, but a number were built by independent coachmakers of Park Ward, Hooper, H. J. Mulliner & Co., and James Young.
The S3 offered a new aluminium Rolls-Royce – Bentley L Series V8 shared with the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. It displaced 6.2 L, 6230 cc or 380 cubic inch, and offered significantly improved performance. It used twin carburetors with an automatic choke.
It’s first advertisement, in the Times of London, noted; “Other features available include fully automatic transmission, power-assisted steering, electrically operated ride control, redesigned and more flexible air conditioning, electric rear window demisters and press button window lifts.”
Several versions were built. The standard version had 1863 examples with 15 with H. J. Mulliner & Co. drophead (convertible) coupe bodies. The S2 with a long wheelbase had 57 factory-built cars, with 5 bodied by James Young and one by Wendler. There was also an S2 Continental, which was created with higher performance engines, higher gear ratios and lighter bodywork. 388 of these were built.
