Bugatti Type 55 was a roadster produced in small numbers in 1932. It was the ultimate exclusive supercar of the early 1930s. Its closest rival was the 8C Alfa Romeo, which was produced in far greater numbers. The Type 55 roadster is considered by many at the time to be the most attractive sports car ever offered to the public.
It was a Series Production Car that was powered by a petrol engine in an Inline-8 format. It was naturally aspirated and boosted by a Roots-Type Bugatti Supercharger. It was DOHC, 2 Valves per Cyl with displacement of 2270 cc / 138.5 cu in. The bore was 60 mm / 2.36 in and the stroke was 100 mm / 3.94 in. Power output was 100.7 kw / 135 bhp at 5500 rpm. It was a front engined rear wheel drive car with a 4-Speed Manual transmission. Top speed was 180 kph / 112 mph. The 0–60 mph time was a fast 13.0 seconds, an amazing time for the era.
The Type 55 was driven to many racing victories by the Bugatti racing team. Production or race tuned versions all fetch very high prices at auction. Fine examples at auctions can go for 1-2 million USD.
