The Panther J-72 was a model of exclusive hand-built cars, by British coachbuilder Panther Westwinds Ltd, created between 1973 and 1985. Its body was styled like the Jaguar SS100 and it used mechanicals from the XJ12, including the very powerful 5.3 L Jaguar V12 engine.
The Panther model J-72 belongs to grand tourer class, where it represents the "S (sport cars)" market segment. They were sporty and elegant 2-door roadsters. J-72 cars were equipped with a choice of engines, including the 3.8L Jaguar XK6, the 4.2L Jaguar XK6, and the 5.3L Jaguar V12.
The J-72 cars all used front engines and rear-wheel drive. There was a choice of a 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission. The lightweight vehicle had good performance. The 1985 Panther J-72, for example had an engine with displacement of 4235 cm3 or 257.5 cubic inches. It had advertised power of 142 kW / 190 hp / 193 PS and torque of 272 Nm or 201 lb-ft. Its curb weight was 1260 kg / 2778 lbs. It had a top speed of 192 km/h or 119 mph, as declared by the factory. Its 0-60 mph time was a quick 6.6 seconds and the 0-100 km/h time was only 7 seconds.
The interior was fine leather and wood and it looks as elegant as any golden age auto. It beat out Rolls Royce in a coachbuilding contest and the victory gave the brand publicity. Three hundred and sixty eight cars were built and sold, mostly to the rich and famous.
