The Lazer was a car built by the British automaker and coachbuilder Panther Westwinds. A single example was built in 1974. The Lazer was commissioned by the Canadian importer of Panther cars. It was requested that it be a totally unique auto, which was to be a gift for his wife, for her birthday.
Robert Jankel did indeed deliver on a unique design. It was based on the mechanicals and the massive 5.3 liter V12 engine from a Jaguar XJ12. It also used the suspension, braking system and 4-speed manual transmission from the XJ12.
The body had a style that blended a supercar with a beach buggy feel. It had a hammered aluminum body, set at hard angles. It had a large wedge fin on the back end. It had a unique 3 person seat, although there was not much available legroom for the middle passenger. The instrument panel in the dash was tilted towards the driver for better visibility.
The combination of a revolutionary design and a powerful 305 horsepower engine would have made this incredibly fun to drive. However, the recipient of the Lazer did not find it to be a fit birthday present and had it returned to the Panther factory, where it sat for several years. It was then sold to Reza Pahlavi, the 18 year old Crown Prince of Iran.
