The first year of the Shelby Mustang was 1965, when Ford shipped stock Mustangs to Shelby American, where they received revised manifolds, headers, and brakes. These early Shelby Mustangs, deemed the GT350, were all white, and all used a modified version of the K-Code 4.7L V8, producing 306hp. These first-year GT350s were not built for comfort, they were dedicated performance machines. There were 34 GT350Rs built specifically for SCCA competition, which went on to become the B-Production champion in SCCA for three consecutive years. For the 1966 model year, the GT350 was made available with some basic optional creature comforts, including rear seats, an automatic transmission, and a choice of paint colors.
Today, Shelby Mustangs are sought-after by collectors because of Carroll Shelby’s significance in motorsport history. The original GT350Rs are trading hands for in excess of one million dollars.
