In 1963, the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo introduced the Giulia sedan. This popular body style was designed at Bertone, by their engineer Giorgetto Giugiaro. He is often described as being ‘the designer of the 20th century’. Dozens of slight variations on this body style were produced between 1963 and 1976. It became a popular touring and sport car for the general public and it was also a very competitive car in touring car racing.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia 2000 GT Veloce model was produced between 1971 and 1976. The 2000 GTV was the final version of the Giulia body style and it replaced the 1750 GTV. The main differences between the two are the bored engine and a restyled front grill. The engine size was increased to 1962 cc. The bore and stroke was increased to 84 mm × 88.5 mm, giving more power. The 2000 GT engine produced 132 PS (97 kW; 130 hp) at 5500 rpm. A SPICA fuel injection system was installed only on cars destined for the United States and Canada. Standard carburetors were available for the European market and those engines produced the same amount of power.
Optional aluminum alloy wheels of the same size as the standard 5. 1/2J × 14 steel wheels had a shape called “Turbina,” which refers to the wheel’s resemblance to a jet engine. The 2000 GT grille has horizontal chrome bars, featuring sections forming the familiar Alfa Romeo heart shape.
The production run, lasting for 6 years produced 37,459 2000 GTV cars. The last of the US models could not meet 1975 USA safety and emissions regulations. So they were imported and labeled as model year 1974 despite a 1975 certificate of origin. This makes these rare and sought after models.
