The 320is was a sports sedan car built by German automaker BMW produced from 1987-1991. It was a special model in its 3 series of entry-level cars. It was produced for sales in Italy and Portugal only. All the 320is models were left hand drive.
The “i” in its moniker stood for “fuel injection” and the “s” for sport. It came with a sport-tuned suspension and a high rev 4-cylinder engine which gave it a lot of pep and punch. It used a double overhead camshaft (DOHC,) 4 valves per cylinder, with 16 valves in total. It produced 192 hp at 6900 rpm with 155 lb-ft of torque at 4900 rpm. It had a 0-100 km (62 mph) speed of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 143 mph. The performance was better than the US bound 318is because of its lack of a catalytic converter.
The 320is is well loved by collectors because of its performance and its features. It came with features and options usually only available on much more expensive cars, such as air conditioning, Recaro seats, 5-speed transmission, sunroof, power windows and metallic paint. It was known as the”Poor man’s M3.””
The design styling looked much like the well-loved classic 2002 model. Its racing heritage shone through and it made for an inexpensive but sporty daily driver.
