Introduced at the 1979 Frankfurt Auto Show, the M535i is the only official BMW Motorsport-developed version of the first generation 5-Series, the e12.
The M535i was never produced for North America, as the 3.5L M30 engine did not meet US emission control standards at the time. Additional US government safety mandates would have hindered the car’s performance as well, so BMW only sold the M535i in Europe and South Africa.
The M535i’s suspension was comprised of MacPherson struts up front and a semi-trailing arm design in the rear, in addition to high-performance springs and shocks. The M535i was available with multiple unique options; the M535i had Motorsport-derived front and rear spoilers, Recaro sport seats, a close-ratio transmission, a limited-slip differential, heavy duty brakes, motorsport pinstriping, and the steering wheel from the M1 supercar was made available in 1980 and 1981.
The BMW m535i had a very short run, albeit a memorable one as the car marked BMW’s Motorsports division’s entry into four-door sedans. Only about 1400 M535is were produced, making them hard-to-come by today.
