    About the Ford Torino

The Torino was an automobile produced by Ford between 1968 and 1976. It was a mid-size auto that came in the form of 2-door hardtop, 2-door fastback, 2-door convertible, 4-door sedan, 4-door hardtop and a 4-door station wagon. It was built to be an upscale version of the Ford Fairlane. They are most known for their high performance versions, which were fitted with large displacement engines with massive horsepower.

One edition of particular interest to muscle car enthusiasts is the 1970 Ford Torino Cobra Sportsroof. It had a 429 Cobra engine that produced a massive 375 horsepower. It used a 4-speed close ratio transmission with a Hurst shifter. It had a special competition suspension and F70-14 tires, to keep all that power on the road. Stylistic enhancements included a flat black hood and grille, wide wheels, exposed hood latches, and “Cobra” emblems.

It was a 2-door coupe body type using RWD (rear-wheel drive) and a manual 4-speed transmission. Its petrol (gasoline) engine had displacement of 7033 cm3 or 429.2 cubic inches. The advertised power was 276 kW / 370 hp / 375 PS and torque was 610 Nm or 450 lb-ft. Top speed was 217 km/h or 135 mph. The 0-60 mph time was 6.5 seconds and it could do 0-100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. Its standing quarter mile drag time (402 m) was 14.9 seconds. With racing slick tires, Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine it tested at 13.39 seconds.

Ford chose the Torino for the base of its NASCAR cars for years, to great success. The fastback style was tweaked to gain better aerodynamics. Ford released special edition Torinos that made use of what they had learned on the track. The Torino Talladega and Torino King Cobra were such editions. These high performance cars came with engine choices like the Boss 429.
