First showcased at the 1948 London Motor Show, Jaguar’s XK120 was immediately adored by the public. The car on display was merely a prototype, but its design caused such a reaction that Jaguar immediately went into production of the XK120.
The “120” name referred to the car’s top speed, 120mph. In 1948, that actually made the XK120 the world’s fastest production car. Acceleration was impressive as well, with a 0-60mph time of 10.0 seconds.
The XK120’s dual overhead cam 3.4L straight six had an alloy cylinder head, hemispherical combustion chambers, inclined valves, and twin side-draft SU carburetors. Underneath, the XK120 had independent torsion bar front suspension, semi-elliptic leaf springs out back, recirculating ball steering, telescopically adjustable steering column, and 12 inch drum brakes at all four corners.
